WHAT’S IN A NAME?
A good name is to be chosen over great wealth; favor is better than silver and gold.
PROVERBS 22:1
I am the father of three boys. They each have good names, names that mean something.
My oldest son is Hampton Otis, named after Civil War general Wade Hampton of South Carolina. He was the governor of South Carolina, an outdoorsman, and physically strong. Otis was part of my granny’s daddy’s name—Quincy Otis Wise. Also my middle name is Otis, after my daddy.
My middle son is Colby Lynch. I grew up on Lynches River, so I originally wanted his name to be Lynch but realized it really wasn’t a first name. Colby means “coal miner’s settlement,” but another interpretation is “man of the outdoors.” I knew Colby’s name was a fit the first time he picked up a lizard: he didn’t even flinch.
My youngest son is Crawford Marion, named after the Revolutionary War hero Francis Marion, known to have kept the colonies inspired. The story goes that at a big party in Charleston, the owner of the house barred all the doors and told everyone, “Alright, nobody’s going home until we all get drunk!” Wanting no part of that, Francis Marion jumped out the top-floor window, broke his leg upon landing, and limped all the way home. Later that evening the British came by and burned the home and all the drunken occupants in it. The name Crawford means “the crossing of blood lines,” and it has the word ford in it, which is Jennifer’s maiden name.
I am the father of three boys. I pray that they grow into their names, and that the lives they choose to live will have a positive impact on someone else’s.
